Disclaimers
After a discussion with the organisers of Chase The Sun in June 2018 I became aware of legislation and requirements for 'events'. Thanks to CTS for making me aware of the pitfalls in today's society where fun has to be regulated.
I normally cycled without a helmet until January 2024, seeing the activity as low risk, but noticed disclaimers and conditions on the CTS website for obligatory helmet so always had one on the out-leg, sometimes tying it to the saddle bag on the return. However, came off in January 2024 and spend a couple of days throwing up in hospital, amnesia so not sure what happened, maybe too old to fall properly, maybe tried to hang on to the bike, likely head first onto the tarmac after ~50,000 uneventful miles.
IS THIS (BEAT THE SUN) AN EVENT?
It was not meant as such, I set up the website after there was some banter on the CTS Facebook page about riding back the next day. I wondered if it could be done by a weak to average cyclist, around 60 years old.
However it could be interpreted as an 'event' as I am offering to mention people who have completed the ride back on this site and I posted my planned route.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
For events you may need a licence, a risk assessment and organiser liability insurance.
I do not accept any money so it seems I do not need a licence for this (?non-)event.
The risk assessment goes a bit like this: It would be irresponsible to organise a cycle ride on the open roads encouraging people to cycle to exhaustion, trying to navigate at the same time because there is no signposting.
Especially if participants have done the same distance the previous day.
It is simply too dangerous. So the sensible advice is not to do it even if it were an 'event'.
I can not accept any responsibility if you decide to exercise your freedom to embark on a mad adventure for no possible gain. I have so far been unable to complete the challenge, I am not safe in busy traffic, and I make mistakes, accidentally breaking the highway code, so I certainly cannot vouch for or advice anyone else on these matters.
I have made enquiries about event insurance, waiting for a response. Such insurance would cover me if it can be demonstrated loss was due to my negligence
I have made a list of what you get and what you do not get below, that should clarify my intentions behind this website and my ride.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
Free downloadable route suggestions from Burnham on Sea (pre 2023) and Weston Super Mare (2023 onwards) to Minster on sea.
My experience with preparation and nutrition
Free listing on the pages of honour
WHAT IS EXCLUDED
No medical advice or treatment
No Mechanical advice or help
No equipment
No insurance for yourself or your equipment
No transport or accommodation
No food or drink supplies
No signposting
No road closures or marshalling
WHAT THIS MEANS
You are on your own
Making your own decisions whether to start, continue or abandon the mad adventure
Providing your own equipment, transport, mechanical repairs, food & drink, accommodation
Your own decisions whether to make adaptations to your route or whether to follow the highway code at all times
Cycling in traffic, often not accustomed to cyclists, on poorly maintained roads with little or no cycling infrastructure (sadly the current state in the UK)
It is madness to attempt this, even for experienced cyclists
